That's So Gay: Using Southern LGBTQ History to Fight for Our Rights

The news is full of stories of Southern LGBTQ people being attacked, banned, and erased by state legislatures, school districts, and more. The efforts to hide Queer and Trans people are nothing new and, unfortunately, these efforts have been fairly successful. However, LGBTQ have always been organized, active, and critical parts of our rich and diverse Southern history.

Join the Invisible Histories Project co-Founders, Josh Burford & Maigen Sullivan, as they uncover Southern LGBTQ events, places, and people that you may not have previously known and discuss why it's more important now than ever that we save, and share, these histories.

Maigen Sullivan, PhD is Co-Founder and Director of Research & Development for the Invisible Histories Project (IHP), a nonprofit working with institutions and communities to collect, preserve, research and make accessible the rich and diverse histories of the LGBTQ Deep South.

Joshua Burford is the  Co-Founder & Director of Outreach & Lead Archivist for The Invisible History Project. He is an award-winning historian, archivist, and educator with over 20 years of experience creating stronger communities for Queer and Transgender people across the U.S. He is perhaps best known for his work to preserve and make accessible the Queer history of the American South through the development of archival collections and oral histories. Josh is a nationally recognized educator and trainer who has worked with K-12 schools, colleges and universities, corporations, and non-profits to bring greater knowledge about the ways each can be more inclusive of diverse identities, engage in self-evaluation about best practices, and can create pathways for increased retention of minority individuals.
